First things first. Go ahead and grab the home maintenance checklist PDF (in two cute color schemes!) by clicking on the button below.
Once you’ve grabbed your printables, you’ll see that we’ve broken down the home maintenance log into two parts. One page helps organize monthly, quarterly, biannual, and annual tasks. The other page provides a breakdown of tasks to complete each month. You can use one or both– totally up to you!
Let’s talk about how to use them.
We will always have some tasks that are recurring– things we have to do monthly, every three months, twice per year, or yearly. The first page of our home maintenance checklist helps us keep track of those items all in one place.
But sometimes it’s hard to know which tasks we need to complete and how often we should be completing them, right?! While everyone’s home, preferences, and needs will be different, we’ve created a general timeline for recurring home maintenance tasks to help you fill out your checklist with ease.
Of course, please use caution when completing any home maintenance tasks.
Below is a list of home maintenance tasks that you could add to your list to be completed every month:
Some home maintenance tasks will be less frequent, needing to be completed only once every three months. Here are some tasks that you could add to your quarterly home maintenance list:
There are some home tasks that are best completed twice per year. Here are some ideas for your biannual home maintenance list:
And of course, some tasks only need to be done once each year. Here are some potential annual tasks to add to your list:
The frequency of the tasks on these lists can vary due to numerous factors, so if you prefer a different timeline than the suggestions laid out above, feel free to tweak them to meet your needs.
The second page of our home maintenance log breaks down tasks by month. If we only assign ourselves a few tasks each month, keeping up with the maintenance of our homes will feel a lot less intimidating!
Below, we’ve listed some ideas for tasks you could add to your checklist each month. The timing of these tasks will vary depending on where you live due to climate and the needs of individual homes, so plan accordingly.
Even though it may be cold outside in January, there are plenty of indoor tasks that can be completed. And we can use that extra boost of motivation that comes with the New Year to get ahead on our decluttering and cleaning!
We’re still mostly focusing on indoor tasks in February, but we can begin to think ahead toward spring and preparing for warmer weather as well.
Spring cleaning typically kicks off in March! Along with focusing on deep cleaning, it’s time to start prepping those outdoor areas for spring.
While continuing spring cleaning in April, it’s a great month to check the exterior of our homes for any damage that may have occurred during the winter months and begin to make repairs.
With the weather really warming up, May is a great time to complete some of the larger outdoor tasks like staining and pressure washing.
It’s time to wrap up any tasks that need to be completed before summer is in full swing!
July tends to be full of fun summer activities, but we can still work on a few maintenance tasks to make sure our homes are running smoothly.
With back-to-school around the corner, August is a great time to wrap up repairs and focus on creating organized entries and clothing.
September can feel like a second new year, so it’s a great time to give our homes another deep clean. Since cold weather will be here soon, we need to start preparing for that as well.
It’s fully fall at this point, so we need to make sure we’re staying on top of leaf maintenance and preparing for the colder winter months.
Chances are that we’ll be having a lot more family and friends coming through our homes for the holidays, so we’ll want to make sure everything is running smoothly before we jump into hosting.
Finally, December is often busy with holiday festivities, but it’s still good to be vigilant about checking for damage and leaks so we don’t end up with any major issues during the holidays.
